WP1: Pre-Writing Assignment 1

This picture is called "Mississippi Delta Negro children." It was taken by Dorothea Lange in July 1936.

In this photograph there are four visible children. I am guessing that the are brothers and sisters. The girls sitting looks like she is the oldest, then the boy stand in front of her to be the next oldest, then the boy leaning on the post and finally the littlest to be the little child leaning on someone in the background.

The kind of life they live looks to me as a poor family with lot of relatives to take care of. None of the children have shoes on. Their clothes are working clothes. The boys have overhauls on and the girls have dresses on. Most farmer where overhauls out in the field when they are farming so that's why I associated their clothes as working clothes. The look like they are tire and hot. Considering this picture was taking in Mississippi, I'm sure they were hot. The porch is broken in the front with pieces of it laying on the ground.

The architecture in this picture is a porch that they are sitting on. The porch looks rugged and pieces are falling off of it. The support of it is made from brick, a railing is a pole but the rest of it is made from would. It does look pretty sturdy for the most part. There isn't much landscape to see beside the ground that the porch is on and where the little boy is standing. And some bushes in the background on the side of the house/porch.

The kind of activities that would take place there is the family sitting around relaxing. It would be a place where they could keep an eye on their children, and to socialize amongst each other. Slavery ended Aug 14, 1865, but they still didn't have the freedom they deserved until 1968 until the Civil Rights Movement came in effect. The kind of people that we would see here are African America's that either live there.

This picture made me feel sad. The children look sad and depressed. The boy standing up looks exhausted. Taking history class and knowing what they had to go through breaks my heart. Its a picture that I want to jump in and help save them from their sad or hardships that they'll have to go through.

Blog Post: Experience with Photography

My experience with photography is very little. They only time I've really experienced photography is when I got my senior pictures taken or when they took pictures for the army. In the army though we didn't pose or make ourselves look good. They just took pictures of us in the moment. Which I though turned out really awesome to see our real facial expressions. It captured the way we felt at the time.

I do not have have knowledge on photography. It's something I have never made a priority to know about. I do think pictures and art are very captivating and can say a lot, or put meaning into something but I don't know what goes into making this photos look beautiful, captivating or speak for themselves.

I think photography is very interesting. Especially pictures of people, animals, and nature. I am into more black and white picture, especially of people. I also really like picture of cities with lots of color. Their are a couple of photographer that I really like and all three of them took photos in black and white of people. One being Kim Anderson, her pictures are usually of children doing sweet and innocent things. They are in black and white but with certain things or objects in color. Another photographer I really like is Christian Coigny. His photographs are very simple and capture natural beauty of things weather that would be nature or people. He does have nude art but it is classy and tasteful. Charles Clyde Ebb has a photo that most people have see if they have ever went into the picture section of a store or an art store called Lunch atop a Skyscraper. I like this picture because it captures them in a really moment. They aren't pretending to be up there. A lot of picture now days put people in digitally and I think that takes the realness out of a picture.
